About
Fábio Yu Chen holds a BSc in Biology (2022) and an MSc in Ecotoxicology and Risk Analysis (2024) from the University of Aveiro and attended the Advanced Course in Scientific Research (2025–2026). He held a research fellow position in ETERNAL - “Boosting the reduction of the
environmental impact of pharmaceutical products throughout their entire life cycle” (BI/CESAM/ETERNAL/2025) and previously in the project NanoHarmony - “Towards harmonised test methods for nanomaterials” (BI/U188/10248/2022) where he developed his Master’s dissertation on the environmental safety assessment of engineered nanomaterials and the harmonisation of ecotoxicological methodologies for Daphnia magna. His work has contributed to adaptations of OECD Test Guideline 202 for nanomaterials to the OECD Guidance Document No. 317 on aquatic and sediment toxicological testing of nanomaterials.
Fábio is currently a candidate for the PhD project CROSS-REPRO: Cross-Species New Approach Methodologies for Reproductive Toxicity Assessment, hosted at CESAM and iBiMED (University of Aveiro), within the European PARC initiative, under the Supervision of Prof. Susana Loureiro and Prof. Margarida Fardilha. The project aims to develop innovative New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) that integrate ecotoxicology, reproductive biology, omics technologies, and machine learning to assess chemically induced reproductive toxicity across multiple species (human, bovine, and marine invertebrates) within a One Health framework.
Alongside his research activities, Fábio is actively engaged in scientific governance and student representation. He currently serves as Finance Committee Member of SETAC Europe and as a member of the SETAC Europe Student Advisory Council, contributing to the engagement of early-career environmental scientists across Europe. He is also a student evaluator at the Portuguese Agency for Assessment and Accreditation of Higher Education (A3ES), in higher education quality assurance processes. Previously, he served as President of the Fiscal and Jurisdiction Council of the Students’ Union of the University of Aveiro (AAUAv) and as President of the General Student Board of the Biology Students’ Union (NEB-AAUAv), reflecting his strong commitment to academic leadership and student representation.
