Internationalisation at Home: Evaluating Pedagogical Outcomes in a Cross-Continental COIL Experience
We are thrilled to announce the publication of our new article, "Internationalisation at Home: Evaluating Pedagogical Outcomes in a Cross-Continental COIL Experience," in the Journal of Science Education and Technology (Springer Nature).
Through a longitudinal study involving students across four academic cohorts (2022–2025) from the University of Aveiro (Portugal), São Paulo State University (UNESP), and Padre Albino University Centre (UNIFIPA), we explored the impact of Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL) on intercultural competence, transversal skill development, and international academic engagement.
Our findings highlighted intercultural connection, teamwork, and international collaboration as key benefits perceived by participants, while also identifying challenges related to time management, time zone differences, and group dynamics. These results reinforce the potential of COIL to make international learning experiences more accessible and inclusive, while emphasising the importance of institutional support in transforming individual pedagogical initiatives into sustainable internationalisation strategies in higher education.
A huge thank you to all the amazing authors Renato M. Rodrigues, Jorge Cabral, Maria de Lourdes Pereira, Marco G. Alves, Ana Paula Girol, Erick J. R. Silva, and Margarida Fardilha, as well as the collaborating institutions, for making this research possible!
