About Fardilha's lab

Fardilha’s Lab was officially created in 2010. Together with other groups Fardilha’s is integrated in the Institute for Biomedicine - iBiMED, University of Aveiro, located in the beautiful city of Aveiro.

Fardilha’s lab is particularly interested in the molecular mechanisms associated with male infertility and prostate cancer and in the investigation of potential molecular targets suitable for diagnosis, prognosis and therapy. The research is focused in the study of protein phosphorylation, an important regulatory mechanism in eukaryotic cells, in particular the role of the Phosphoprotein Phosphatase 1 (PPP1) in male-related disorders.

PPP1 is one of the most conserved phosphatases and it is involved in several processes. The specificity and activity of PPP1 depends on its binding partners, known as PPP1-interacting proteins (PIPs). Hence, the main objectives are 1) to identify and characterize PPP1 and PIPs interactomes in male reproductive-related tissues, using the Yeast Two-Hybrid system and conventional biochemical methods to validate protein interactions; 2) to identify and characterize protein complexes that may be used as therapy targets or prognostic/diagnostic tools; 3) to develop tools to target protein complexes. Our ultimate goal is to translate basic research knowledge to clinical applications.
