Joana Quelhas

About

Joana Quelhas completed the Degree in Veterinary Medicine in 2008 at the University of Porto Abel Salazar Institute of Biomedical Sciences and attends the PhD in Veterinary Sciences at the same Institute since 2018. She is the Technical Director of a semen collection and semen storage center at Lusogenes, a production and marketing company for genetic material, and is responsible for the bovine semen technology (collection, microscopic and macroscopic evaluation, freezing and storage), assures veterinary medical care and welfare of the farm's Bulls, and the selection and provision of feed for farm animals, coordinates the reproduction center team, controls semen stocks, the applicable legislation and respective application, assures the selection of suppliers and provision of products and services inherent to the different semen production activities, collaborates in the purchase of animals and semen, ensuring the genetic improvement of the national dairy herd, monitors and controls the execution of the different activities inherent to the exploration, and coordinates the company's artificial insemination team. As a veterinarian, owner and manager at Joana Quelhas - Serviços Veterinários Unipessoal, Lda she dedicates herself to the outpatient clinic of horses where she provides reproductive support to the breeder, including the initial clinical examination of the mare and the stallion, ultrasounds, semen collection and evaluation, study of the most appropriate reproductive methodology and its implementation, and assistance until the childbirth. She also provides exams and advice, ambulatory surgeries, equine identification, prophylaxis, nutrition support, sports medicine, and dentistry. Joana is also the Technical Director of a veterinary pharmacy at Anadiagro, Lda, ensuring compliance with the legislation applicable to veterinary pharmacies, sales rules and storage rules, the control of the dispensing of medicines, the collection of medicines from the market whenever necessary, and the training to the employees of the pharmacies, within the scope of veterinary medicines and the norms and rules applicable to the activity.

Her interest in semen biotechnologies led her to join the Institute of Biomedicine-iBiMED / University of Aveiro and under the guidance of Professor Margarida Fardilha and her object of study became the development of an alternative immunological technique to semen sexing. used in the semen commercialization industry for artificial insemination, mainly in cattle. His work has been developed within the scope of his PhD project and he has already published, with the collaboration of other students and co-supervisors, a review article on the subject and shi is envolving in the project the project EPIC-XS-0000186 “Sperm sexeing by targeting X-bearing or Y.bearing sperm membrans proteins
