Margarida Fardilha

About

Margarida Fardilha did her degree in Biochemistry in 1996 at the University of Porto. After she attended the curricular year of the Doctoral Program in Biology and Medicine at ICG, Lisbon. During her doctoral work, developed in the Department of Biology at the University of Aveiro, she studied protein complexes involved in the regulation of sperm function. Actually, Margarida Fardilha is Assistant Professor at the Department of Medical Sciences from University of Aveiro.

Margarida Fardilha has a vast experience in the area of Biomedical Sciences, in particular in Molecular Biomedicine. Her dedication to Biomedical Sciences has been recognized by the scientific and academic community and can be proven by the publications that are relevant to the area.

Research interests

Margarida Fardilha is studying the role of the Phosphoprotein Phosphatase 1 (PPP1) in male-related disorders. PPP1 is one of the most conserved phosphatases and it is involved in many crucial processes. The specificity and activity of PPP1 depends on its binding partners, known as PPP1-interacting proteins (PIPs). Fardilha is particularly interested in understanding the molecular mechanisms associated with male infertility and prostate cancer and identifying the molecular targets suitable for diagnosis, prognosis and therapy.

Hence, she wishes to identify and characterize PPP1 and PIPs interactomes in male reproductive-related tissues, to identify protein complexes that may be used as therapy targets or prognostic/diagnostic tools and to develop tools to target protein complexes.

Her ultimate goal is to translate basic research knowledge to clinical applications.
